Moral and ethical aspects of the initial consultation and subsequent cooperation.

Additionally, you can read the following articles on this topic:

1. Make an appointment for a consultation, examination or treatment.
2. Planning the time for the reception.
3. Visit to the clinic.

When a patient comes to us for help, we hope that he voluntarily and consciously takes this step. That the patient understands that we are on his side, that we are needed to help professionally, according to modern protocols, achieve a common goal - oral health. At the consultation, we openly talk about the situation in the mouth and about possible treatment options. If our views with the patient differ at this stage, then we honestly and openly reject those options that may be ineffective, not long-term or will not benefit him.

For example, if there is inflammation on the tops of the roots, then we will refuse to install a crown on this tooth without first treating the root canals. Or if this inflammation is not treatable, then we will recommend removal and give an explanation for this, as well as vice versa, if there are indications for installing a crown, then we will definitely indicate this. Or if the patient has applied with only one disturbing tooth, and we see other problems, then we are obliged to inform, and the patient himself will choose whether to follow the doctor's instructions or not. But we ourselves will not act against these indications, observing the principle - do no harm.

The most important thing for us is mutual trust, we openly tell and explain everything at the reception, in the same way we want openness from the patient. Sometimes, patients come in a state of fear and excitement. And sometimes, they are so scared that they refuse to listen to explanations and carry out diagnostics, and want to know only the cost of treatment. Sometimes, patients already have a negative experience, and are in a defensive position - "I don't want to know anything, I just need to plug one hole." Unfortunately, with such an attitude, it will not be possible to achieve successful and effective cooperation. And the quality of the work will be unsatisfactory.

For a better understanding of why we are principled in this matter, I will give an example from another field of medicine. For example, a person got a speck in his eye, and he turned to an ophthalmologist. The ophthalmologist pulled out the object that got into the eye, and at the same time found that the patient was developing glaucoma and cataracts. Do you think a doctor is obliged to inform a person about this? Or did the patient come only to remove the speck and he does not want to know about possible blindness?

It is very important for us that the patient delves into the process of diagnosis and treatment, attentively listens to explanations, talks about his doubts and worries, asks questions, even if they seem very stupid to him. And only in this way it is possible to achieve a positive and long-term result of treatment.

If a person is worried that during the consultation he may miss some important details or questions, then we recommend writing them down in advance, or taking one accompanying person with him to the reception, who will also listen to the doctor's explanations, and then at home they will be able to discuss what they heard again. But due to the Covid situation, we ask patients to pre-arrange a visit with an accompanying person for a consultation.

All these issues of openness and dialogue concern not only the initial consultation, but also the time of the entire staff. We ask you to get in touch with us in case of any questions regarding teeth.

We really hope that our cooperation will be open and easy!
