Professional oral hygiene — a procedure consisting of the removal of dental deposits from the teeth.

The procedure is aimed at maintaining the health of the teeth and gums, at preventing tooth decay and gum inflammation, as well as at extending the service life of fillings, restorations and prosthetic structures.

How does the procedure take place?

  1. First, the hygienist removes tartar using ultrasound.
  2. The hygienist then uses, where necessary, a specialised Air-Flow device to remove soft and pigmented plaque. (Read more in the section "Air-Flow hygiene".)
  3. Afterwards, the teeth are polished using rotating brushes, rubber cups and specialised pastes.
  4. To conclude the procedure, a disposable tray containing a remineralising compound is applied to the teeth for a couple of minutes, in order to strengthen the teeth and reduce sensitivity.
  5. The hygienist draws the patient's attention to problem areas that need more thorough cleaning, provides advice on individual hygiene products and gives recommendations.

How long does the procedure take and how often should it be performed?

  • Professional hygiene is carried out in a single visit lasting 30–60 minutes. The procedure is generally painless, however anaesthesia is administered if required.
  • It is sufficient to perform this procedure once every 6–12 months, depending on the rate of dental deposit formation.
  • If a patient has recently had implants or braces fitted, it is initially recommended to visit the hygienist approximately once every 3 months, after which the visit schedule is arranged individually.
  • In cases where the gums are severely inflamed and bleeding, or where there is a large amount of subgingival tartar, a single professional hygiene session is not sufficient — additional treatment is required and the visit schedule is arranged individually (see: Gum bleeding, individual hygiene training).
