Remineralising therapy is a procedure aimed at restoring dental tissues, saturating them with minerals and preventing their destruction.
Enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body, which is due to its high mineral content: calcium, phosphorus, fluorine, magnesium and others. After eruption, the dental tissues begin to receive minerals from saliva.
When the amount of minerals supplied decreases, or when the enamel is exposed to adverse influences, the teeth become sensitive, susceptible to decay and destruction.
What contributes to enamel destruction:
- Unbalanced diet (insufficient calcium);
- Chronic diseases of the ENT organs (for example, adenoids and mouth breathing);
- Chronic diseases of the digestive system (for example, reflux or increased acidity);
- Chronic diseases that disrupt the metabolism of microelements in the body (for example, diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands);
- Hormonal changes;
- Pregnancy and lactation;
- Insufficiently thorough hygiene (plaque on the teeth prevents the absorption of minerals from saliva + the microorganisms in the plaque destroy the enamel);
- Consumption of carbonated drinks, lemons, water with lemon juice, freshly squeezed juices (the acid contained in them destroys the enamel);
- Regular use of hard toothbrushes, tooth powders, abrasive whitening toothpastes, aggressive tooth brushing;
- Simultaneous consumption of cold and hot foods (for example, hot coffee with ice cream);
- Mental disorders (anorexia, bulimia + subsequent vomiting).
The enamel loses its properties and lustre, becomes thin, and as a result heightened sensitivity appears. The first signs of mineral deficiency in the teeth are the appearance of white spots on the enamel. As the process progresses, the white spots increase in size, become rough, may deepen, turn dark, undergo carious destruction, and sensitivity will increase.
Indications for preventive purposes:
- Prevention of tooth decay, starting from the eruption of the first teeth;
- Prevention of tooth decay in cases of multiple carious lesions and a large number of fillings;
- In cases of occlusal pathologies;
- After professional hygiene;
- After removal of braces;
- After whitening.
Indications for therapeutic purposes:
- Caries at the white spot stage;
- Increased tooth sensitivity;
- Signs of reduced calcium and phosphorus levels (white spots on the enamel);
- Congenital hypoplasia;
- Fluorosis.
The procedure can be carried out in several ways (the most appropriate is chosen by the dentist):
- In young children, a special gel is applied to the teeth after brushing once a day before bedtime.
- The remineralising compound is applied once in the dental chair following professional hygiene.
- Remineralising therapy at home. In this case, professional hygiene and instruction in independent dental care are carried out at the clinic. The dentist then fabricates individual trays. The patient will need to place the restorative gel into these trays daily and wear them on the teeth in accordance with the doctor's instructions. Due to the tight fit of the trays against the tooth surface, the process of the preparation being washed away from the enamel by saliva is reduced, and the duration of its action is increased. In this way, remineralising therapy becomes maximally effective. Upon completion of the home course, it is necessary to return to the clinic to consolidate the result.
Important!
This procedure must be approached seriously.
It should be carried out only under the supervision of a dentist, since contraindications may exist and an uncontrolled excess of minerals can have a negative effect on the teeth and the body as a whole.
As a rule, in order to achieve a tangible result, remineralising therapy must be carried out in courses several times. To consolidate the results achieved, thorough home dental care, dietary correction and keeping chronic diseases under control are essential.
