What is ICON?

ICON is an innovative method of treating tooth decay without drilling or fillings, by sealing the affected tissues with a specialised resin.

This method is used exclusively at the earliest stage of decay — the white spot stage.

This is the stage at which demineralisation is occurring only within the superficial layers of the tooth tissue, but a carious cavity has not yet formed. It is therefore critically important to detect decay at this stage and treat it in time, because once an actual cavity is present, this method is no longer effective.

Who is this method suitable for?

Patients with decay at the white spot stage:

  • children;
  • adolescents;
  • patients who take meticulous care of their teeth and seek to address problems at the first signs of their appearance;
  • patients with enamel damage following orthodontic bracket treatment.

The precise indications for ICON treatment can only be determined by the dentist following a personal clinical examination.

Advantages of ICON Technology in the Treatment of Tooth Decay

  • Completely painless — no anaesthesia required.
  • Highly effective. Complete arrest of the pathological process and prevention of further enamel breakdown.
  • No damage to tooth tissues; the tooth remains entirely intact.
  • Suitable for use in children and pregnant patients.
  • Multiple teeth can be treated simultaneously in a single appointment.
  • In addition to the therapeutic benefit, an improvement in dental aesthetics is also achieved.
  • Speed of treatment — the procedure takes just 15–30 minutes.

How Does ICON Caries Treatment Work?

The dentist cleans the teeth of plaque using brushes and polishing pastes. Where necessary, the gum is isolated to prevent the materials used from causing irritation. The ICON procedure itself then proceeds as follows:

  • A gel is applied to the affected area, which cleanses and prepares the surface. After 2 minutes, the gel is rinsed away.
  • A dehydrating and desiccating agent is applied.
  • The infiltrating resin itself is then applied in several successive layers. It deeply permeates the affected tissues, reliably sealing and restoring them.
  • As a final step, polishing is carried out to achieve a smooth finish on the treated surface.
