Malocclusion in adults – when should I put braces?

Malocclusion in adults – when should I put braces? фото 1

Malocclusion can be corrected in adulthood. Sometimes the costs and efforts outweigh the positive effect of the correction. Since the growth of the jaw bone has already been completed, adult patients should also devote much more time than children. In some cases, it may even take several years.

What are the reasons for adult braces?

The optical perfection of the front teeth is just one aspect of the correction. The dentition, including the lateral teeth, should function without problems before and after treatment. Braces should not lead to a deterioration of the situation.

The causes of malocclusion are:

  • congenital crooked teeth, not corrected in childhood
  • Loss of teeth and, consequently, displacement of teeth within the jaw
  • later eruption of wisdom teeth, which also leads to the "migration" of teeth in the jaw
  • periodontitis

If people can hardly smile, then it is necessary to act. Health problems are also possible.
An anomaly in the position of the teeth leads to:

  • pain in the jaw joint
  • grits his teeth in sleep
  • excruciating headache and neck pain
  • closely spaced teeth are pushed over each other
  • large gaps that increase the risk of tooth decay

Fixed or loose braces - what are the treatment methods?

Fixed and removable "loose" braces or braces are available. Depending on the type of malocclusion, the dentist or orthodontist decides which method promises the best success.

Fixed braces made of various materials are the most effective. The plates, called braces, are glued to the teeth in question. Braces are connected to the arc using ligatures (thin wires) or elastics (rubber rings). The whole design is called a multi - band device .

Metal rings are attached to the molars on both sides with the help of cement, which together with staples exert pressure. This gradually brings the teeth into the desired position. Braces and wire are adjusted accordingly at certain intervals.

Standard locks are made of stainless steel or stainless steel (nickel-free). There are strong "ordinary" braces and mini-braces made of metal. Tooth-colored braces or transparent ceramic braces are less durable and prone to breakage.  They cost a lot more. However, they are worn more imperceptibly.

Another option is incognito braces, which are attached to the inner surface of the teeth. In principle, the more inconspicuous and aesthetically pleasing braces are, the more expensive they are.

Transparent tires, called aligners, work slower. They protect the tooth enamel, as no metal construction (braces) is required.

After treatment, retainers are used. These are stabilizing structures that are installed permanently or only overnight on the inside of the teeth to hold them in place.

Loose braces, which are not worn constantly, are somewhat cheaper and are considered much more hygienic. However, to achieve a good result, at least 18 hours of daily wear is required here.

What are the prerequisites for successful correction of the position of the teeth?

A prerequisite for successful correction of the position of the teeth are healthy teeth. Caries or periodontitis must be cured before further therapy. Braces can also quickly lead to complications with damaged teeth roots.
