Which is better: metal-ceramic or metal-free ceramics?

Cermet is a type of crowns that have a metal cap on the inside and are lined with a ceramic mass on top.

⏺ Metal-free crowns (made of pressed E. Max ceramic or zirconium crowns) do not contain a metal cap inside.

Both types of crowns are used for prosthetics of both front and side teeth.

⏺ Both types :
- able to withstand significant chewing loads;
- service life of more than 10 years;
- they are comparable in color to their own teeth.

☑ ️ But nevertheless, cermet has some disadvantages, which this type of crowns makes less and less popular:

- analog manufacturing, which creates some errors in the manufacture ( the technician manually makes the crown, sequentially applying layers of ceramics);
- the ceramic mass from the metal cap can be chipped off;
- under the metal-ceramic teeth are sharpened more strongly;
- darkness may appear near the gum, impairing the aesthetics.
- the presence of a metal cap inside can cause darkening near the gum, which impairs the aesthetics;
- also, the metal cap does not give natural transparency of the teeth.

Плю Advantages of cermet: affordable price.

☑ ️ Metal-free crowns disadvantages: high cost.

Advantages of metal - free crowns:
- digital production of 3D, which makes them highly accurate (the crown is made on a computer and ground on a milling machine, which eliminates the shrinkage of the material);
- the crown is made of a single block of material, which eliminates its stratification in the form of chips;
- for metal-free crowns, the teeth are ground less, because the crown is thinner;
- the gingival area does not change in color;
- the crowns look as natural and natural as possible.

That is, metal-free crowns do not have the disadvantages of cermet, so they are becoming more common and therefore we use this type of crowns in our clinic.
