What is a dental scan?

Previously, to take measurements from teeth for the manufacture of crowns in Torrevieja, veneers, inlays, dentures, casts were made and a special silicone material was applied to the teeth, which freezes in the mouth and creates an impression of teeth when extracted. Then it was filled with plaster and a model of teeth was obtained. It was an unpleasant procedure.

Plus, it was necessary to transport these casts to the laboratory, and then store them somewhere.

Now the technology in Torrevieja, Spain is being replaced by a new one: Dental scanning is the taking of measurements from teeth in digital form.  This technology also has other names: digital impression, intraoral 3D scanning, computer scanning)

What is dental scanning used for?

Dental scanning in Torrevieja for the manufacture of one or more crowns, veneers, inlays, bridges.

Scanning of implants in Torrevieja for the manufacture of crowns and prostheses on implants.
Creating the design of a future smile on a computer screen ("Digital smile design").
Creating a mock-up of a future smile that can be tried on live before starting work ("Mosir").
Implantation planning - creating navigational surgical templates.
Dental scanning for planning orthodontic treatment and manufacturing aligners (mouthguards for alignment of teeth)
How does the dental scanning procedure work?

The whole scanning process takes about 5 minutes. The doctor enters the patient's data into the program, installs a soft silicone holder for lips and cheeks, dries the teeth with air and begins to drive a special nozzle with a micro-camera along the dentition. At this time, the image is displayed on the computer screen and the doctor checks its quality and, if necessary, repeats the procedure in some places.

After measurements are taken from both jaws, the dentist asks you to close your teeth and scans the ratio of the upper and lower jaw. Then the scanner program processes the image for several minutes and saves the received data.

With the help of a digital impression, you can get information about how the teeth close, whether they are displaced or tilted. It is possible to consider other structures of the oral cavity: soft tissues, jaw ratios, possible movements in the temporomandibular joint, which is very important for neuromuscular prosthetics to prevent pain and clicks in the joint.

With the help of a scanner, the taken measurements of teeth are displayed directly on the computer screen. Then this information is instantly sent to the dental technician over the network, he models the shape and size of the future structure (crown or veneer) on a computer in a special program, and sends it to be cut out on a milling machine.

This procedure is much easier and more comfortable than taking measurements with classical casts.

What equipment is used for dental scanning at the AP-Denta clinic
