A smile is your personal calling card. How broadly and genuinely a person smiles shapes the impression they make on others. Let's be honest, it's much more pleasant to deal with someone who offers a sincere smile than with someone who hides theirs. This is why it is so crucial to maintain good oral health and take proper care of your teeth.
Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with a healthy and beautiful smile. The realities of modern life are not particularly conducive to preserving one. And when you add congenital defects into the mix, the situation can seem quite disheartening. It's worth noting that imperfect smiles are becoming increasingly common today, with tooth misalignment being a widespread issue. The reasons why teeth grow in crooked are numerous. However, in this case, it's not the cause that matters most, but the consequence. Crooked teeth are primarily an aesthetic concern, and it's essential to address it with all the means at our disposal. Fortunately, today there are numerous technologies available that allow a professional dentist to transform any smile into a dazzlingly beautiful one.
The field of dentistry that deals with teeth alignment is called orthodontics. This branch focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental and jaw abnormalities. Malocclusion, or a bad bite, is now observed in many people, and for each of them, it represents a significant problem. Firstly, a misaligned bite spoils the aesthetic appearance of a smile. But besides that, it can also indicate the development of more serious health issues.
A malocclusion, if present, is typically noticeable from the moment a child's teeth come in. It's hard to miss if it's there. Meanwhile, any specialist will confirm that teeth alignment is far more effective during childhood, while the jawbones are still developing. That said, modern advancements in this field have made effective teeth straightening possible at almost any age.
Today, there are several effective systems for correcting bite anomalies:
Braces. Currently, this system is the most effective method for correcting bite issues. Braces are custom-designed appliances that rectify malocclusions. This method remains one of the most popular, especially since its effectiveness is time-tested and proven by countless examples. Braces are best installed during childhood or adolescence, while the bite is not yet fully formed. These fixed appliances promote the correct development of the jaws. They also have another undeniable advantage: they can help break children of harmful habits that often lead to improper bite formation in the first place. Teeth alignment with braces is both effective and painless. The treatment plan is tailored individually for each patient by the dentist.
Aligners. Teeth alignment using clear aligners is also highly effective. However, this option is only suitable for correcting specific issues such as large gaps between teeth, minor crowding, or other anomalies that don't require more complex methods. It should be noted that severely crooked teeth, unfortunately, cannot be corrected with aligners alone. It's also worth mentioning that using aligners can sometimes be more expensive than braces, especially if they are custom-made using innovative technologies in one of only a few labs worldwide. But the relatively high cost of aligners is offset by their effectiveness. An added advantage is that they are made from a transparent material, making them virtually invisible on the teeth. Aligners are also beneficial because adaptation to them is almost instantaneous, and they are very easy to put on and take out. To ensure their effectiveness, they must be worn for at least 22 hours a day. The treatment process with aligners takes a considerable amount of time, so they need to be replaced periodically. Therefore, when straightening teeth with aligners, they are produced as a full set from the start.
Removable Plates. When it comes to correcting bite anomalies, removable plates are rarely used. This is because these plates can only address minor bite irregularities, and even then, not all of them. In most cases, plates are fitted for young children whose bite is not yet fully formed. It's important to note that removable plates are quite complex devices, consisting of a plastic base and various screws and springs. These are gradually adjusted throughout the treatment. Teeth alignment using removable plates takes several months. Depending on the treatment plan, plates are worn either 24 hours a day or for 12 hours. If 24-hour wear is required, they may only be removed for cleaning and eating; otherwise, they must remain in the mouth.
Trainers. For teeth alignment, trainers are very similar to mouthguards. Externally, they look like an elastic arch equipped with additional elements. This design can help restore proper tongue posture, reduce pressure on the teeth from the lips and cheeks, and relieve tension in the mouth's muscles. Combined, this contributes to effective bite correction, especially in young children. However, teeth alignment using trainers is also employed for adults. The key feature of trainers is that they can only correct minor tooth crowding, which is why they are most often used to consolidate the results achieved by braces. These elastic devices are very popular today, largely because they are quite inexpensive and only need to be worn for two to three hours per day. The treatment period typically ranges from six to eight months.
